Landscape Lighting FAQ

FAQ: Britescape Landscape Lighting

Do solar landscape lights actually work in Seattle?

Solar does work in the summer.  With long days soaking up rays, the lights will perform for 3-4 hours.  But when you really need the light in the wintertime, solar lights fail to live up to the promise. It is the #1 reason people contact Britescape…not enough light!

How do I waterproof my lighting against constant rain?

It can be done by using waterproof connectors and fixtures that are rated IP65 or higher.  Britescape only installs professional-grade lights that have a rating that are rated for the wet PNW. We also use natural metals such as brass and copper that will not chip or fade with time.

How much does professional landscape lighting cost in Seattle?

The budget for a typical home in Seattle will range between $3,000-$15,000. It depends on the fixtures, technology and scope of the project.  Larger lots can be in the $10,000-$30,000 range.  Each project is customizable for your budget.

Why are my outdoor lights flickering or tripping the breaker?

This is typically caused by a cut/damaged wire or excessive water intrusion. Finding the cause and waterproofing the connection or adding a new light will resolve the problem.  Britescape has a dedicated Lighting Service Technician that can troubleshoot the problem.

What is the best lighting color temperature for grey weather?

Warm White (2700K or 3000K) is best for the PNW Grey!  This lumen color is able to cut through the gloom and make the wet landscape look more cozy and less sterile.

How do I stop moss from growing on my light lenses?

A good cleaning 1x/year will keep the moss away.  Ask about our maintenance programs that will help keep the moss/dirt/foliage in check.

Do I need a permit for landscape lighting in Seattle?

Permits are generally not required in Seattle and Bellevue.  However, some smaller municipalities do require a permit and a licensed (06-Limited Energy) electrician to oversee the installation.  Britescape is fully licensed and ready to provide a seamless installation.

How can I light my driveway without light pollution?

The most effective method to reduce light pollution is to utilize downlighting.  By carefully aiming lights at structures and trees, the light stream will be more targeted, helping reduce or even eliminate light pollution.

What are the best lights for safety on wet stairs/walkways?

Landscape lighting is a key to outdoor safety.  We recommend placing a light at each transition within the property, and at the top and bottom of each staircase.  Some stairs are longer and require lights in between transitions.  Having a slight overlap of light from the stairway ensures better visibility.

Can I add lighting to my existing irrigation system trenches?

This one is a bit confusing.  Yes.  Placing landscape wire into the irrigation trenches does work. Can be an effective strategy.  But there are some things to keep in mind.   Ensure that you provide flexibility on final placement of wire by having wire exposed above ground for easier access. You don’t want to dig down looking for wire and hit a fragile irrigation line!

What is the Britescape process for getting a quote on landscape lights?

Following an inquiry, a Britescape Lighting profession will provide a phone consultation to provide introductory information about services as well as collect information about your project.  Our landscape lighting designer will meet you on-site for a design consultation.  You will then receive a quote with fixture recommendations based on your scope and budget.  Once approved, we order your lights and get you on our schedule as soon as possible.

What brands do you carry?

Britescape is unique in that we offer lights that we feel meet your design, budget and availability. We will recommend lights that we think would work best for your landscape including brands including: FX Luminaire, Kichler, WAC, Brilliance and many others.  We like to work with brands that stand by their fixtures for longevity and performance with excellent warranties.

Does Britescape install an existing lighting plan?

Yes. We partner with many architects and designers using their design plans. We take pride in being the installation and maintenance experts.

I am currently installing a new landscape. When should I contact an outdoor lighting designer?

Lighting is the icing on the cake.  Generally it is installed at the end of a project after plant and stone placements have been finalized. However, planning ahead is GOOD!  Meeting with a designer as part of the process will make the lighting an integral part of the plan - not an after thought which can make artistic and technical decisions more intentional.

How long has Britescape been designing and installing landscape lights?

Britescape has been lighting up the PNW for more than 30 years!

Am I able to add more or change the positions of lights after the work has been completed?

One great aspect of landscape lighting is that is can be reconfigured as your garden grows.
